As an advocate for self-discovery and embracing new experiences, I've decided to embark on a breathtaking backpacking trip in Montana. This adventure will be facilitated by the remarkable team at Dare To Detour, with the inspiring Sheryl Wright leading the way. Here are ten compelling reasons why I'm disconnecting from the chaos and immersing myself in the beauty of Montana's wilderness.

  1. Freeing My Mind Completely to Worry About One Thing: Walking.
In our fast-paced world, our minds are constantly cluttered with countless worries and distractions. I can’t wait to devote myself to the simple act of walking through the picturesque mountains of Montana, liberate my mind from unnecessary stress (and necessary stress, because life…), and embrace a sense of tranquility. I hiked the AT (Appalachian Trail) with my cousin-in-law (is that a thing?) for three days and I cried when I left. It was the most alive I have felt in a long time. I can’t wait to extend that feeling and hold myself to doing something like it annually.

  2. Soaking in Nature to Get More Creative.
Nature has an incredible way of stimulating creativity. Surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes, I can’t imagine how Montana will ignite my imagination. I’m stoked to seek inspiration for new ideas, projects, and perspectives. Connecting with nature is essential for anyone seeking to unlock their creative potential, so bring it on Mother Nature.

  3. Remind Myself to Keep It Simple
Life often becomes complicated and overwhelming. Backpacking in Montana is bound to serve as a reminder to embrace simplicity and appreciate the little things in life. Stripped of material distractions, I will reconnect with the essence of what truly matters and find contentment in the present moment. BONUS: My hubby and kid will be flying out to meet me and greet me on the last day, and while I will smell absolutely disgusting, I can’t wait to give them huge, smelly, sweaty hugs.

  4. Get More Prioritized
In the midst of hectic schedules and never-ending to-do lists, we often lose sight of our priorities. By deliberately stepping away from my everyday routine and immersing myself in nature's untouched beauty, I guarantee I gain a fresh perspective on what truly deserves my time, energy, and attention. I’m nearing 40 y’all - and I hear 40-year-old women give zero f*cks so let’s do this.

  5. Surround Myself with Badass Women Making Major Things Happen.
One of the most thrilling aspects of this backpacking trip is the opportunity to connect with like-minded women who are making remarkable strides in their lives. Joined by the extraordinary Sheryl Wright, I'll be in the company of empowered women who inspire with their ambition, resilience, and determination. After my first Dare retreat at 9 Quarter Circle Ranch, Lorca Smetana talked to all of us about resilience and I went on to work 1:1 with her and in one of her cohorts, and one of the most valuable things she told me was that “this is parenting.” Working on yourself, taking time for yourself, scheduling calls with coaches, going to therapy - some of the best things you can do for your kid. And with that….

  6. Give My Hubby a Small Taste of Being the Primary Parent.
Listen, my hubby is a great dad. Like a really great dad, AND more than one thing can be true - mama is the holder of the emotional, mental, physical house and parenting load, and mama is fricken exhausted. Stepping away from our conventional roles can be an eye-opening experience. By embarking on this backpacking journey, I'm really offering my husband the chance to take the lead in parenting responsibilities, fostering growth, empathy, and shared understanding within our relationship. Sometimes we just need a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Mamas/Primary Parents, can I get an AMEN?

  7. Strengthen My Body and Perception of It
We are often so critical of our bodies. I’m here to show her some love. Challenging physical activities present an excellent opportunity to strengthen both body and mind. As I traverse Montana's challenging terrains, I know I’m gonna push my physical limits and gain a newfound appreciation for the resilience of my own body, fostering greater self-confidence and self-acceptance. Who’s with me?

  8. Realize I Have Everything I Need
In our consumer-driven society, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking we always need more. This backpacking expedition will underscore the realization that I possess everything I truly need within myself (and my backpack). Stripping away the excess, I'll discover a sense of self-sufficiency and renewed gratitude for the essentials in life. I did pack some bougie snacks, okay… because food is fuel.

  9. Grow in Resilience
Backpacking in Montana requires adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges. By embracing the uncertainties and pushing beyond my comfort zone, I'll cultivate resilience, empowering myself to overcome obstacles not just on this journey but also in everyday life. As Lorca says, “enduring and resilient are not the same.”

  10. Embrace the Unknown and Let the Universe Work Its Magic.
Finally, this backpacking trip is an invitation to surrender control and embrace the possibilities that the universe has in store. By opening myself up to the unknown, I'll welcome unexpected takeaways, growth, and revelations that may shape my life in unimaginable ways.

There's a magnetic allure to venturing into the wilderness, and my upcoming backpacking trip in Montana holds the promise of these transformative experiences, and many I can’t yet fathom. I am stepping away from every other responsibility so expect delayed responses. I am embarking on a journey of self-discovery, creative rejuvenation, and personal growth. Join me as I disconnect from the chaos and immerse myself in the splendor of Montana's magnificent landscapes. Stay tuned for all of the amazing things I will learn and see.
